YOUNGSTERS preparing for life at big school were given a boost after work inspired by artist and visual poet Charlie Mackesy was given high praise by the man himself.

The Year 6 pupils who were given a taster of life at the Marches School, in Morda Road, were asked to create works based on the artist, who shot to fame for his work during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, during their transition art lesson last week.

The activity proved to be so popular that older students at the school also gave it a go, leading to some fantastic works.

Mr Mackesy, who wrote the The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, was tagged by the Marches, replying 'wonderful' and leading to the post going viral among all his fans.

A school spokesman said: "Our transition Art lesson this year focused on wellbeing.

"The Year 6 pupils looked at the illustrative work of Charlie Mackesy: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse and inspired by this created their very own pieces.

"It was so successful, that when our Year 8 students saw the work drying on the side, they instantly asked to also have a go."

On the viral post, commenters praised the impact that the poet and artists has had on kids.

Hayley Alldridge, head of marketing and brand for the Marches Academy Trust said: “We are so happy Charlie has engaged with our post on Facebook.

"He viewed and commented on the fantastic work undertaken at The Marches School during an art workshop that formed part of the transition programme when our new Year 7 students join us for three days prior to starting with us in September.

"The workshop focussed on wellbeing and as Charlie’s book provides supportive messaging and illustrations, it was perfect for the task.

"Our post on social media has received a very positive response showing how powerful social media can be.
