COUNCILLORS in Oswestry have urged residents close to the St Oswald's Well to check any doorbell videos or home CCTV after a bench was used to vandalise it.
The picnic bench was thrown at the well, knocking masonry into the water close to the shrine in Oswald’s Well Lane, with the incident believed to have happened between 2-4pm on Sunday.
Councillor Jay Moore, who is the town's deputy mayor, put an appeal out for any help in identifying what he believes is three or people and report it to the police.
In a reply to a resident's suggestion that the perpetrators will be shown leniency, Cllr Moore said: "But we can't do nothing and let it off easy. I will at least try to get some information.
"We have a lot of good community spirit here. Something may just turn up."
Meanwhile, Cllr Jonathan Upton said: "Residents of Maserfield Ward are advised that the police have been contacted, and the area has been secured until repairs can be undertaken.
"Should anyone know what happened, please feel free to contact either myself or Cllr Moore, and we will treat it with confidentiality."
He added: "It'll likely be people with Ring doorbells or home CCTV who could assist."
Anyone with information to identify the vandals can call 101 or get in touch with Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood Team.
