A SPORTS and social club in Ellesmere recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Ellesmere Comrades Club was founded in 1922, and has been based in its current location on Victoria Street, for 50 years.

And a century in, the club is still eager to welcome new members and new activities that could be housed within its facilities – and is on the lookout for new committee members.

A spokesperson said: “Keeping the club running takes a lot of work and behind the scenes the volunteer committee members give up some of their free time to do jobs around the club, from redecorating the club through the lockdown to ensuring the bar is covered when someone is off sick, they are always on hand to help out.

“To enable us to continue providing the facilities and take us forward we need new committee members. Any paid-up member of the club can be considered for a place on the management committee.

“We also have a dedicated finance committee who would welcome new members from a business, management or finance background. Both committees meet monthly to conduct the business of the club. If you can commit to giving up one evening once a month to share your knowledge and ideas we would like to hear from you."

The club hosts a variety of events such as evening classes which cover subjects like line dancing, pilates, ballroom and Latin-American dance.

It consists of a large function room that features a stage and music system as well as seating for 160 people, and is in use Monday to Thursday nights. On Friday and Saturday nights the room is available for private functions.

The function room also comes complete with its own bar, while another bar stretches through the lounge, TV room and snooker room.

The lounge bar is described by the Comrades Club as “a comfortable area to enjoy a quiet pint and socialise and is used for Sunday lunches, quizzes, bingo, crafts and a great place to meet for coffee.”

Meanwhile, the snooker room is host to weekly matches in the Whitchurch and Oswestry league, with the Comrades Club hoping to start a pool and darts team to compete locally against other clubs and pubs.

The spokesperson added: “If you would like to be considered for a position on the committee, please feel free to attend the Yearly AGM to be held on Monday, February 7, 2022 at 7pm at the Ellesmere Comrades Club.”

The club has a monthly diary of their events which can be found at www.comradesclub.org.uk as well as a Facebook page.
