TRIBUTES have been paid to two football stalwarts in Chirk following their recent deaths.
David Griffiths, more commonly known to locals at Chirk AAA FC as Diggles, and John Parrish, a founding member of Chirk Youth FC, who both passed away recently.
Nigel Roberts, from Chirk AAA, announced the news to club members via social media, and passed on his condolences to the mens' families.
He said: "We are sad to announce the passing of another club stalwart, David Griffiths aka Diggles.
"Diggs had been associated with our club for many years, winning the 2009 NEWFA Youth cup as assistant manager to Roger Pearce and also assisting Mark Holmes when we won the 2011 WNL Reserve Division.
"He was an integral part of our club for many years and will be sadly missed by all.
"Our condolences to Sheila, Mark, Lee and family at this sad time.
"Another sad loss yesterday was the sudden passing of John Parrish.
"John was founder member of Chirk Youth Football Club and was the main drive behind their foundation.
"We send our condolences to Jen, Carl, Sean, Joanne and all the family."
Chirk Youth FC added their condolences on the loss of John.
They said: "The club is saddened to hear that John has passed away.
John helped start Chirk Youth and was the first secretary of the club.
"We would like to send our condolences to Jen and the rest of John's family at this sad time.
"The club will hold a minutes silence at all games this weekend to remember him – RIP John."
Facebook commenters described the news as a 'sad day for Chirk' with many passing on their best wishes to the families of the two men.
Ali Williams wrote: "A very sad day for Chirk yesterday, both were instrumental for Chirk youth Football club – John as secretary and Diggles as league winning U16 manager.
"Thinking of both families at this sad time."
