THE principal of a college where a teenager was taken home after complaining of a high temperature says it has followed government guidelines to isolate him.

A 19-year-old student at North Shropshire College's Walford Campus, near Baschurch, fell ill during a practical exam at the campus's Harris Centre on Wednesday morning, and was quickly removed.

Ian Peake, principal and chief executive Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College – which runs the campus and its Oswestry base too – says the student was quickly isolated before he was picked up by a parent, and rebuffed any claims that he had tested for coronavirus.

"A 19-year-old animal care student at the college’s Walford Campus came to college this morning for a practical examination, for which he was located in a room on his own with an assessor," said Mr Peake.

"After about an hour at college, he complained that he was feeling unwell with a high temperature.

"In line with government advice, he was then isolated in the first aid room while he waited for a parent to take him home.

"As a precautionary measure that particular part of the college was cleaned while the other animal care students, about 15 individuals, were asked to wait in the canteen.

"They then returned to continue their studies in the Harris Centre.

“The college has been extremely careful to follow closely government guidance in respect of coronavirus to ensure the wellbeing of our students and staff."
