ISN’T it brilliant how Oswestry’s ‘spy in the sky’ CCTV system helped solve an impressive 11,208 ‘incidents’ over the past couple of decades. So, If you have mischief in mind, never forget a terrific band of volunteer screen-watchers, are keeping an eye on you.
We’ve just heard that ours is one of the best CCTV operations in the West Midlands, with co-ordinator Jim Stafford revealing the picture quality is now so good, that more offenders than ever are being caught.
Back in 2001 the town’s night life was riddled with street fights and vandalism, which has been dramatically cut by CCTV. That’s a massive tribute to the band who give their time free when they could command minimum wages of £18,000 a year, if paid.
NOW that Morrisons is heavily into building its new supermarket and garage – on the old Smithfield site down Salop Road – it begs the question who will be joining them there. The fascinating original ‘leisure park’ idea, long since forgotten, had plans for Cineworld and the likes of Frankie and Bennys.
Now those seem lost forever, the new plan provides for ‘accompanying businesses’ but none have so far been revealed!
WHAT will the villagers plump for with their school in Pontfadog, now it’s been offered them free when it closes at the end of term?
Any venture is conditional on it being run by the community on a sustainable and viable business plan. Ideas so far include an activity centre, a community-run café or garden or for community-led housing. I’d put my money on it being used for ‘start-up businesses’ which would look towards future growth.
SHROPSHIRE Canal supremo Michael Limbrey reminds us there are just days left to this Saturday’s May 4 deadline to enter this year’s exciting Montgomery Canal Triathlon, on May 18.
It sets off from Newtown and involves cycling 17 miles to Pool Quay; walking or running the 11 miles to Morton near Oswestry then finishing with seven miles of canoeing to the Llangollen Canal junction at Lower Frankton.
A WREXHAM-based cleaning company has set a great example to Oswestry, by taking time out of its busy schedule to spring clean the town’s filthy road signs free, as a gesture of goodwill.
None are dirtier than ours, particularly the one leading out of Gobowen for St Martins. Any volunteers?
EXPERIMENTAL driverless vehicles could be in Shrewsbury town centre in just four weeks! Shropshire Council’s been looking at how autonomous vehicles could relieve congestion and improve transport links.
You’ve been warned!
