YOUNGSTERS have set a shining example to highlight hot topic of climate change.
Llanfyllin High School’s student-led energy management and eco teams joined forces to organise the day.
Student Jocelyn McKenzie said: "We’re ‘Dressing Up Bright’ to get students and staff to realise how much money and carbon we can save if we use lights only when they’re needed – and turn them off when not.
"We could save the school up to £3000 a year as well as cutting our carbon emissions by 11.5 tons a year!"
Students paid £1 to wear their own clothes and competed to be the brightest dressed. Proceeds will help fund further energy-saving energy measures in the school.
Assistant headteacher Huw Lloyd Jones said: "At a time when school budgets are tight and when the school Strikes For Climate are making us more aware of the need to cut our carbon emissions we’re really proud of the students for organising this day."
The students will be reinforcing their message by covering the school with posters.
The campaign is part of a wider project, Our Future’s People run by Severn Wye Energy Agency and funded by the Welsh Government Rural Development Programme.
It is supporting students in nine Powys secondary schools to find ways to reduce their school’s energy use.
The potential annual savings across the nine schools are £140,469 and 1024 tons of carbon dioxide.
