RE-SUBMITTED plans to build five apartments in Oswestry could be used for staff housing for care homes if approved, according to the application.

The plans, for land east of 56 Salop Road, were originally approved in 2021 for three apartments but an amended application was submitted to Shropshire Council last month.

In a design and access statement submitted with the proposal, the applicant Derrick Dulson, through agents RFDavies Architectural Services, says the plan is now to build five apartments.

It said: “The application seeks amended planning consent for a scheme of five apartments similar in design and footprint as the previously approved plan for three apartments.

“The principle of an apartment development at this site has been established.

“However, the costs of construction of the apartment block as approved is disproportionately high in providing only three units.

“Dr Olusegun Osinkolu, a partner in the applicant company, has recently taken over the management of the Meadowbrook Care Bungalows at Gobowen and the sheltered retirement complexes at Regent Court in Roft Street and Trimpley Court in Ellesmere.

“He has found difficulty in recruiting staff locally – bringing in staff from outside the area will require the provision of accommodation.

“These apartments will be ideal for staff housing.”

It added: “The proposed apartment block is essentially in the same position as the one previously approved albeit that there is a single-storey element to the eastern end.

“The principle outlook from the main windows of the apartments are facing away from other domestic properties in the area to avoid any undue loss of amenity from other domestic properties in the vicinity.

“Access to the site will be directly off Middleton Road along the road serving the medical centre and the sheltered accommodation beyond.

“In addition to the four parking spaces agreed for the houses fronting Salop Road there will be five parking spaces allocated for the apartments similar to the provision for the houses.

“There will be adequate space at the eastern end of the site for turning.

“The site position can ideally attract occupants who do not require the use of a car, it is within easy walking distance of Regent Court and a minibus will be provided for transport to Gobowen and Ellesmere.”

A decision on the application is expected in early January.
