WITH just one week to go, a final call for Whittington Music Festival tickets has been made by organisers.

Four days of fabulous music can be heard this week at the festival which will run from Thursday, May 16, to Sunday, May 19.

A spokesman for the festival, which is to be held at St John the Baptist Church in Whittington, said it is "a perfect venue for chamber music, with its wonderful acoustics and, with no pillars, an excellent view for all".

They added: “A group of international classical musicians comes for a week in Shropshire to work as a chamber ensemble and astounds audiences every year with the quality of their music.  

“The Thursday evening concert has long been sold out but tickets are still available for the other concerts. 

Friday’s “Circle of Friends” showcases music by romantic composers the Schumanns, the Mendelssohns and Brahms. 

“Saturday’s ‘Visions and Apparitions’ includes music by Beethoven and Clara Schumann as well as the world premiere of a song cycle by Jeremy Sams to be sung by local soprano Kizzy Lumley-Edwards.

“Sunday afternoon brings “Youth and Experience” with works by Arvo Part, Elgar and Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, written in 1825 when he was only 16. 

“This is the work said to have created a new chamber music genre.

“On Saturday the festival musicians will be conducting workshops and masterclasses for some talented young musicians who will then perform in the Family Concert that afternoon, followed by some cool jazz by Ivor Novello and MOBO award-winning pianist Zoe Rahman.”
