AN OSWESTRY thief will be sentenced by a crown court judge after admitting two assaults in separate incidents on Thursday.
Carl Doidge, 37, appeared at Telford Magistrates Court from HMP Hewell, where he is currently in custody on recall from previous offences.
He had been convicted in his absence in a hearing on Thursday morning for assaulting a former partner on June 29, 2022, with Magistrates finding him guilty on the basis of the witness’s evidence.

However, Doidge appeared at a sentencing hearing in the afternoon and the bench was told an appeal was being considered.
He also changed his plea to an offence he originally denied last week for assaulting a security guard at B&M in Oswestry in an incident on August 31, 2023 after he was confronted for stealing a bottle of wine and chewing gum, which he admitted last week.
The court heard that Doidge spat in the face of the guard and left without paying.
He was also set to be sentenced for stealing vapes, e-cigarettes, tobacco, cigarettes and a Halifax Bank Card to the value of £1,624.51 from Esso at Mile End Services.

It was heard that he trespassed behind the counter at the services and then also stole a bag from an employee which contained the bank card.
Defence for Doidge said that he had previously been in a relationship with the victim from Thursday’s hearing, and that they had rekindled it before it ended because of the defendant’s ‘paranoia’ following his previous drug use.
Magistrates said they felt that the bench lacked sentencing powers and passed it to Shrewsbury Crown Court for a later date.
