ART-efact has announced the four selected artists for their artist-in-residence programme taking place in Oswestry this summer.

The artists will have the opportunity to have their work displayed at ‘Summer of Art’, while also participating in ART-efact from June until September 2023.

The artists will have a unique chance to have paid time to work intimately with the collections and archives at Oswestry Town Museum or the Town Council.

A spokesperson from the residency programme said: “We are excited to announce the four selected artists for the ART-efact art residency taking place in Oswestry this summer.

“The four artists will work closely with Oswestry’s history and stories at the Guildhall Town archives and Oswestry Town Museum bringing them to life in a final exhibition coinciding with Heritage Open Day exhibition in September.”

The funding for ART-efact has been provided by Arts Council England and Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ)

“There will be opportunities to meet the artists and to learn more about their work and ideas over the coming months which we will announce on Instagram and on our Facebook page”, the spokesperson added.

The four winners are Paul Bohanna a ceramics artist,  influenced by historical ceramics and their methods of production – he explores the social role of pottery.

Emma Cummings is a cross disciplinary artist examining our relationship with nature, her work is rooted in scientific and cultural research, observational drawing and site-specific responses.

Jean Atkin Jean Atkin has worked as a poet in education and community projects since 2011. 

Her award-winning work has been widely published and commissioned, including on BBC Radio, and often focuses on place, work, and history.

Her latest books are The Bicycles of Ice and Salt (IDP, 2021) and Fan-peckled (Fair Acre Press 2021).  She creates friendly, inventive workshops for people of all ages. 

Joseph Schneider, the last chosen artist said: “Artefact residency gives me a unique opportunity to explore the past, present and future of Oswestry through paintings and drawings of the town.

“I will research work by other artists that depict Oswestry, make my own paintings from observation in the street and run a free workshop at Designs in Mind."
