SHREWSBURY Town enhanced their winning start to pre-season by beating a Manchester United XI following a 4-2 win over Tranmere Rovers.
The Shrews beat Rovers behind closed doors, but more than 2,400 were at the Greeehous Meadow to see an inexperienced Manchester United side, including Darren Gibson, run out onto the pitch.
Town found themselves 2-0 up at the break after James Collins had given them an 11th minute lead with a powerful header, and Sean McAllister scored with another header after 30 minutes when he looped an effort over the stranded Alan Fettis.
Daniel Drinkwater arrowed a shot past Chris Neal to pull one back for United five minutes after the restart, but it was Shrewsbury who looked the most likely to score again before the referee called time on a solid performance from the Shrews.
Town boss, Graham Turner, said: "We had to be disciplined and work hark whilst making sure our positional placing was right.
"United brought a young side but there was still a number of useful players out there.
"We used the ball well and forced their 'keeper to make a number of good saves so it has been a good day for us."
